What is compassion fatigue?

Compassion Fatigue is the latest in an evolving concept that is known in the field of Traumatology as "Secondary Traumatic Stress" (STS). Most often this phenomenon is associated with the "cost of caring" (Dr. Charles Figley, 1982) for others in emotional pain.

Empathic engagement with clients and their trauma can result in Compassion Fatigue (CF). This term describes the painful transformation in the caregivers' inner experience.

What are signs of compassion fatigue?
  • dread of certain sessions (or work in general)
  • nightmares
  • intrusive images and thoughts related to client's trauma
  • diminished joy in life
  • numbing of one's internal life, and shifts in one's core beliefs
about safety, trust, esteem, intimacy, and control
